Michael Schumacher’s wife opens up about the F1 legend, saying he sometimes has trouble understanding what’s happening around him.
Michael Schumacher’s wife, Corinna, has shared a rare and heartfelt look into her husband’s terrible ski accident from nearly 13 years ago in a new Netflix documentary. Schumacher is one of the biggest legends not just in motorsports, but in sports history overall. This will be explored in the documentary ‘Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend,’ which comes out on October 2.
The 105-minute film tells the story of his intense and memorable 1994 F1 season, when he won his first of seven World Championships at just 25 years old. While that amazing season is the main focus, viewers will also get a glimpse into Corinna’s life.
Since 2013, when Schumacher had a bad ski accident in the French Alps with his son Mick, he’s been kept away from the public. He hit his head on a rock and was quickly taken to the hospital for a serious brain injury. After two surgeries, he was put into a medically induced coma until June 2014.
Since then, Corinna has been his main caregiver, supported by nurses and therapists who help around the clock. She has worked hard to keep her husband’s privacy safe during his long recovery.
Corinna previously spoke publicly in the 2021 Netflix documentary ‘Schumacher,’ and she opened up about their early days together. She said Paula Abdul’s song “Rush Rush” was special to them. “That was our song back then,” she shared. “When I hear it now, sometimes I cry in the car.”
She also talked about how her mother didn’t approve of their relationship at first. “My mother was totally against it. Michael was always at the go-kart track, pushing others out,” Corinna said. “My mother would say, ‘Look at Schumacher! They have a go-kart track at home, and now he’s pushing people out!’”
There were rumors that Schumacher might have a rare condition called locked-in syndrome, where he could be aware but unable to respond. But reports say this is not true. A source said, “He might understand some things happening around him, but probably not everything.”
Not much is known about the 57-year-old’s current condition. His friend Marc Surer thinks it’s unlikely he will ever appear in public again. He said, “I don’t know what difference it would make to see him. There was a story he was seen at a wedding in Mallorca, but I don’t know if that’s true. It’s better we remember Michael as he was — winning and happy.”
Surer added, “Will we see Michael again in public? No, I don’t think so. His family wants to keep the image of him as a happy, successful man. That’s enough. But I’m curious what Corinna will share in the documentary.”
