Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury date and place confirmed with smart choice to avoid a tricky situation
After years of back-and-forth, the big heavyweight fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is finally happening!
It was announced on Thursday, September 24, that Fury and Joshua will face off at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Friday, December 11.
“For 15 years, no one could make this fight happen. Back in April, I said any announcement would come from me,” said Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh on X. “Now I can confirm Fury vs Joshua is coming to the UK, just like I promised the fans. Time for talking is over…”
Before Cardiff was chosen, Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium and London’s Wembley Stadium were also considered as potential venues.
The Principality Stadium has a retractable roof, which will be helpful since the fight takes place in winter. Around 80,000 tickets are expected to go on sale.
It’s also been reported the fight might happen in the early hours of December 11 to fit the American TV schedule. A press conference is set for September 30 at 6pm in London.
After the announcement, Joshua shared two photos of himself in a white blazer in front of a Union Jack flag, writing: “The quietest ones often pull the strings. Those who seem least involved may have the most control. Let others shout first, the wisest wait for the final move. Yours truly, Anthony Joshua.”
The fighters and their promoters, Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn, have been in talks for a while. Fury has even hinted on social media that he might move on from this fight to face Oleksandr Usyk again.
AJ and Fury met last after Fury’s comeback win over Arslanbek Makhmudov in April at Tottenham Stadium. After the fight, Fury challenged Joshua to fight him next, shouting into the mic, “Do you accept?”
Joshua didn’t step into the ring but fired back: “I punched you when we were kids, and I’ll do it again. You won’t tell me what to do; I’ve been chasing you for 10 years. I’m the boss; you work for me.”
Since the Makhmudov fight, Fury has fought once more, knocking out Polish veteran Mariusz Wach in Thailand. Joshua returned to the ring after a tragic car crash in Nigeria took the lives of Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Despite being knocked down early, Joshua came back to win by knockout in the second round against Albania’s Kristian Prenga.
