Man City issues firm statement after being charged with 114 Premier League rule violations
Although reports say Manchester City has been found guilty of 114 financial breach charges, the club has released a statement saying the Premier League process is still “ongoing.”
On September 25, The Athletic reported that City was found guilty of nearly all the charges related to breaking financial rules. So far, no penalties have been decided, and City plans to appeal the decision from the independent commission.
Right after the report, Manchester City responded with this statement:
“The Premier League process is still ongoing, with important parts yet to be finished and under strict confidentiality. Manchester City’s position hasn’t changed since the club’s statement in February 2023. We have respected the process for eight years, trusting that the Premier League Board and Executive would act as fair and unbiased regulators.”
Back in February 2023, City was charged with breaking financial fair play rules 115 times between 2009 and 2018. At that time, the club said they were “surprised” by the charges, especially since they had shared a lot of detailed information with the Premier League.
City also said, “We welcome the review by an independent commission to fairly examine the strong evidence we have. We hope this matter will finally be settled.”
Between 2009 and 2018, City was becoming a top European team, spending about €1.44 billion on new players and winning the Premier League in 2012, 2014, and 2018.
Since the charges in 2023, City has strongly denied any wrongdoings, saying they have “irrefutable evidence” to defend themselves.
If found guilty, possible penalties include fines, losing points, or in the worst case, being relegated from the Premier League.
