Rio Ferdinand goes viral after Premier League medal claim as Man City is found guilty of 114 charges
Rio Ferdinand has caught everyone’s attention with his reaction after it was revealed that Manchester City was found guilty of almost all 115 Premier League charges against them.
Back in February 2023, City faced 115 charges related to breaking financial fair play rules over nine years. After a long three-month hearing that ended in December 2024, an Independent Commission panel made the decision on the biggest case in Premier League history.
After more than 18 months of little news, journalist David Ornstein from The Athletic shared that City was guilty of nearly all charges. No punishments have been decided yet, and City, which has always denied the claims, plans to appeal.
An official statement from the Premier League hasn’t been made, but City told The Athletic the process is still ongoing and under strict confidentiality. They stand by their February 2023 statement and expect a fair and independent review.
Journalist Ben Jacobs said potential punishments could be anything from fines and suspended penalties to losing points or even being kicked out of the Premier League. Many hope City might lose some of their league titles, including the ones they won in 2012, 2014, and 2018.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand quickly shared his thoughts on X, joking, “Another Premier League medal to be added to the cabinet.” He was referring to the 2011/12 title when City won the league for the first time in 44 years, beating United on goal difference.
Sergio Aguero scored the famous winning goal in the 93rd minute of that season, but Ferdinand is now hoping he might add a seventh Premier League medal to his collection.
Even Jose Mourinho once joked about possibly getting another medal. Before a 2024 match between Fenerbahce and United, he said, “I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points, and maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me my medal.” Mourinho was talking about the 2017/18 title, won by City with a record 100 points, while his United finished second.
