Anthony Gordon openly points out an England teammate’s mistake during Spain game live on-air
Anthony Gordon hinted that one of his England teammates played a part in their 3-2 loss to Spain.
In their first Nations League match, the Three Lions nearly pulled off a big win against the world champions at Wembley Stadium. Gordon and Harry Kane scored quickly to erase Lamine Yamal’s early goal.
England played really well after going behind and should have gone two goals up. But Kane’s penalty hit the crossbar after Jude Bellingham was brought down in the box, and that miss ended up costing the team.
Shortly after, substitute Alex Baena scored a lovely goal and then set up Mikel Oyarzabal for another, which tipped the game in Spain’s favor.
Gordon, who looked fantastic running down the left against Spain, felt England would have won if the penalty had been scored. Speaking live on ITV, the Barcelona player said, “I think we’re right there with the best. If the penalty had gone in, we would have kept our momentum and probably won. During the match, I really believed we’d win if we scored that penalty.”
He added, “If we had met Spain in a final, I’d back our chances. Confidence doesn’t guarantee a win, but we showed tonight that we’re a top team.”
The 25-year-old impressed with his speed and skill, scoring a great goal after a slick one-two with Bellingham. He’s been in good form at Barcelona too, with five assists in his first LaLiga games.
Although Kane’s missed penalty was a big factor in England’s defeat, there were other mistakes too. Marc Guehi lost the ball to Yamal for the first goal, and Nico O’Reilly gave the ball away to Baena, who scored from a tight angle.
Coach Thomas Tuchel said Kane’s miss was a “decisive” moment but also pointed out the “individual mistakes” that stopped England from winning. He said, “Kane missed the penalty, which might have ended Spain’s long unbeaten run. Then there was a big error for the equalizer, and the third goal was the only real shot Spain needed. We have to learn from this and focus on the next game against Czech Republic.”
England will play their next game against Czech Republic on Tuesday evening, September 29.
