Wayne Rooney’s idea about Man City’s 2012 title win comes up again, and Djibril Cisse responds
Former Queens Park Rangers striker Djibril Cisse recently responded to some old comments made by Wayne Rooney and Mike Dean about Manchester City’s big title win in 2012.
That final day victory has been talked about for years, and now it’s back in the news because reports say City broke 114 out of 115 financial rules they were accused of. No punishments have been decided yet, and City plan to appeal if found guilty. Possible penalties could include losing the three Premier League titles they won between 2009 and 2018.
Back in May 2012, City won their first Premier League thanks in part to a famous last-minute goal by Sergio Aguero. Many have criticized QPR’s play that day, including former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney. Rooney questioned why QPR kicked the ball straight back to City after Edin Dzeko’s equalizer.
“Paddy Kenny should have done better for a couple of the goals,” Rooney said to The Sun in 2022. “City get the second goal and QPR kick it straight back to them and that’s never been questioned – I find that strange.”
Rooney has also brought up Djibril Cisse’s choice to celebrate with the City players after the final whistle. In fact, he did so again last year on The Overlap Fan Debate with Mike Dean.
Recently, those old comments showed up again on social media because of the current charges, and Cisse jumped in with a strong reply. He shared a clip of Dean and Rooney’s remarks with the caption: “I’m not gonna let you people talk like that. Let’s have a proper meeting and talk about it. Because I’m not accepting your nonsense anymore. So let’s do it.”
In another post, Cisse said, “Is it our fault if they lost 5 games in the league and waited for the last game to win the league???”
Mike Dean, who refereed the match, also shared his views. He said, “What was strange was that once QPR knew they were safe, the game restarted, and Jamie Mackie was celebrating while the game was still going on because they knew they were safe. They made it 2-2 and just gave the ball back straight away. We all wondered, ‘What’s going on here?'”
Wayne Rooney pointed out that QPR had many former Liverpool and City players, mentioning Cisse who was seen celebrating with City players after the game.
“Cisse has come out, hasn’t he, and said he was celebrating with the City players after the game,” Rooney said.
