Micah Richards shares some surprising clothing rules he has to follow when working on TV.
Micah Richards has shared some of the style rules he sticks to when he’s on TV – including one he set for himself.
The former Manchester City and England defender is a busy broadcaster, often seen on the BBC, Sky Sports, CBS Sports, and Netflix’s Rest is Football.
Known for his great energy, Micah quickly made a winning partnership with Roy Keane, creating a fun and unexpected duo after Richards “burst onto the scene.”
Even though he works with different networks, Micah stays just as charming but switches up his style depending on the audience. On CBS’s Golazo Champions League show, his “Big Meeks” personality shines through.
At 38, Micah has toned down his outfits from loud and flashy to a more simple look. After noticing he’d gained a little weight, he decided to avoid certain colors on TV and now sticks mostly to blues, dark blues, blacks, and greys. Bright colors are saved for big events like finals. He also avoids green at the BBC because of the green screen, which famously caused problems at the 2026 World Cup.
About his clothing choices, Micah told SPORTbible:
“Around a year ago, I noticed on camera I looked bigger because of the colors I was wearing. I’m supposed to look sharp! Now, I stick to blues, blacks, and greys. I only bring out bright colors for big games, like a Champions League or World Cup final.”
He also explained how dressing changes depending on which network he’s working for:
“At Sky, we started off all in suits, but later went for a more casual look because suits can feel a bit stiff. At CBS, it’s suits all the way. For the BBC, it’s more casual, but I can’t wear green because of the green screen. For shows like Super Sunday, I go smart casual. I always think about where we’re filming and what kind of game it is.”
Micah hangs out with many fellow pundits, and when it comes to style, he praises Jamie Redknapp and Thierry Henry as the best dressed. Among younger ones, Daniel Sturridge gets a shout for his cool look.
Redknapp, who co-founded the Sandbanks clothing line, is also the pundit who teases Micah most about his outfits. Micah isn’t as open to criticism from Gary Neville but admits Neville has improved lately.
“We use the same tailor for our suits,” Micah said. “Jamie tells me to ‘sit up straight’ or complains about my trousers being too tight or long – he’s obsessed with fashion. I don’t take fashion criticism from Gary Neville or Roy Keane because they tend to stick to basics. But, to be fair, Gary’s been stepping up his game over the last 18 months. Even Jamie Carragher’s looking sharp now—but Gary still has a bit of work to do.”
Micah admits he had some fashion misses in the past, like those wild Vivienne Westwood pieces he thought looked cool at the time. But his new Autumn/Winter menswear collection with George at Asda shows a fresh style for him.
He said:
“You don’t need big logos everywhere. This collection is nice, sleek, and fresh. I love it because it’s smart casual – the perfect mix. I’ve got plenty of suits for work, but casual is great too. When you look back at old photos with giant logos, you wonder, ‘What was I thinking?’ Less is definitely more.”
