Jamie Carragher responds kindly after a fan claims he was ‘bullying’ Mark Goldbridge on the Overlap show.
Jamie Carragher replied directly to a fan on social media after being called out for ‘bullying’ Mark Goldbridge during the first episode of Overlap Daily.
The Overlap media group, co-founded by ex-Manchester United defender Gary Neville, bought Mark Goldbridge’s YouTube channels—The United Stand and That’s Football—in April in a big deal reportedly worth seven figures.
The first episode of Overlap Daily, featuring Neville, Goldbridge, and Carragher, came out on Friday (October 9) on all major streaming platforms. People on social media had mixed feelings about it.
At the start of the show, Carragher pointed out that Mark Goldbridge’s real name is Brent Di Cesare and joked that he’s actually a Nottingham Forest fan, not a Man United supporter. While this is a well-known fact in the football YouTube world, Carragher still brought it up, asking if Goldbridge would be his usual self on the show, or if he had ‘sold out.’
Goldbridge fired back with a quick joke about Carragher’s punditry career being similar to his playing career. Soon after, Carragher called him the “biggest fraud” for changing his name and supposedly switching teams. Goldbridge asked why, and Carragher explained, “Your name’s Mark, but it’s really Brent, and you say you’re a Man United fan, but you’re really a Nottingham Forest fan.”
The playful teasing between Goldbridge, Neville, and Carragher kept going throughout the episode, but not everyone saw it as fun. One person on X claimed Carragher and Neville were ‘bullying’ Goldbridge. The fan wrote, “Gary Neville & Carragher were bullying, cutting Goldbridge down in this interview. Huge respect to @markgoldbridge for staying calm while facing backhanded insults hidden in laughter from these egomaniacs.”
Carragher responded directly to that on X, saying Goldbridge had teased him and Neville a lot over the years, and they were just giving some friendly banter back. He wrote, “Morning Kevin, Mark has battered me & Gary for years, which has been funny & no problem to either of us. We gave him a bit back yesterday; don’t take it too seriously.”
Besides the Goldbridge banter, another moment from the episode got people talking when Carragher took a dig at Rio Ferdinand. The pair have a long-standing feud, and while talking about Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent row with Portugal’s coach Jorge Jesus, Carragher mentioned Ferdinand, who famously backed Ronaldo.
“People think it’s good to be close to people in football, but it can cause problems,” Carragher said. “People like Piers Morgan and Rio Ferdinand, who are big in the media, are making fools of themselves because they know Ronaldo. You can know someone and want to help them, but you can’t defend the wrong things they do.”
Ronaldo has been in the news lately for leaving Portugal’s camp after a disagreement over playing time and later accusing the coach of breaking his trust. The 41-year-old could be banned for up to six months for leaving without notice, and the Portuguese Football Federation has temporarily suspended him while deciding on his punishment.
