Bayern Munich shares update after Vincent Kompany is taken to hospital following training session

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to the hospital after collapsing following a training session, according to reports. An ambulance transported him, and earlier, a helicopter landed at Bayern’s training ground. Sky Sports Germany says the Belgian coach is now in stable condition.

BILD, which first shared news about the incident, mentioned that the 40-year-old had been watching the U23 team train before suddenly collapsing, which is when the rescue helicopter was called.

After these reports, Bayern shared a message on social media: “Vincent Kompany needed medical attention on Friday after collapsing during training with FC Bayern’s amateur team. He had been watching the second team’s session. He will have thorough checks and stay under medical care. Meanwhile, his coaching staff will handle training and matches.”

Bayern’s Sporting Director, Max Eberl, added: “Vincent’s health is our top priority. We’re doing everything to help him recover quickly. He’s getting the medical support he needs and all the time necessary. His coaching team, whom we fully trust, will carry on his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes him a speedy recovery.”

Kompany had been dealing with a viral infection and stayed on the bench during Saturday’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over RB Leipzig. He was uncertain to be on the sidelines for Wednesday’s Champions League game against Arsenal but did return to the Allianz Arena for the match.

His assistant, Aaron Danks, handled pre-match media duties before the Arsenal game and explained that Kompany caught a virus that was “affecting his legs.”

“The doctors know much more than I do,” Danks said. “The main thing is we’ve encouraged him to rest and take all the time he needs. Getting Vince to rest is the challenge.”

Kompany spoke at the post-match press conference after the 2-2 draw on Wednesday and was asked about his recovery: “It’s a virus, yes. Everything else is normal, human things. As a coach, you want to do everything. I had a strong virus and didn’t listen to my body.”
