Mercedes’ “unneeded” post about George Russell right after Kimi Antonelli wins the world title upsets fans

F1 fans have mixed feelings about what Mercedes shared on their official social media just after Kimi Antonelli won the 2026 world championship following the Mexican GP.

Antonelli secured the Drivers’ Championship thanks to his third-place finish at the race, earning 15 points. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton finished second after a tough battle with teammate Charles Leclerc at Turn 4. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took first place, marking his third win of the season.

At just 20 years and 68 days old, Antonelli stayed calm during what was a hectic race in Mexico. He broke Sebastian Vettel’s record by more than three years, becoming the youngest champion ever. He’s also the first Italian to win the championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Antonelli got emotional on the podium when Puccini’s “Nessun Dorma” played, a song his grandfather loved. “It was very special to me because my grandfather always listened to it,” he said. “I think he’d be really proud. I’ve cried a lot today, but it’s a good feeling.”

While Antonelli was celebrating, his teammate George Russell was having a tough time. Mercedes posted a clip showing Russell nearly in tears as he hugged team boss Toto Wolff, who apologized for the tough day.

Russell struggled with an energy problem early in the race and later collided with Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar, which earned him a 10-second penalty. He finished sixth and was described by Mercedes as “distraught.” He also skipped media duties and was fined €5000.

Fans have been divided about Mercedes sharing Russell’s emotional moment. Some feel it was unnecessary and said it only made things worse for George. One fan wrote, “George didn’t want this kind of attention.” Another said, “It feels like they’re apologizing but not really helping.” Others thought posting the video wasn’t kind or fair.

F1 action continues at the Brazilian Grand Prix on November 8.
