Bruno Fernandes has already shared his top three dream destinations as talk about him leaving Man Utd continues.
Manchester United have some important decisions to make ahead of the January transfer window, including what to do with Bruno Fernandes, who could leave Old Trafford in 2027. Fernandes, who played a big part in United’s amazing comeback win over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, has a contract until June 2027, with an option to add another year.
The Red Devils have already talked to the 32-year-old about extending his contract, but lately, it seems he might actually leave.
Last month, Fernandes grabbed the spotlight for the wrong reasons when he criticized Michael Carrick’s tactics after their 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League. He was then left out of the starting lineup against Bournemouth and didn’t play at all as they lost 3-0. Carrick said the decision was purely tactical and not because of Fernandes’ comments.
The manager and captain had a friendly chat last week where Fernandes promised his full commitment to the club. He then returned to the starting lineup for the loss against Chelsea and scored a penalty in the win over Roma.
United are hoping that this great comeback will boost their form in the Premier League, with Fernandes delivering top performances. The midfielder will want to sort out his future soon.
Right now, it looks like the one-year extension in his contract will be triggered. But if he does leave next summer, he already has three favorite places in mind. In a December 2025 interview, he said he’d like to play in Spain and Italy, where he has strong ties—his daughter was even born there. He also mentioned wanting to return to Portugal, especially to Sporting, where he felt very happy before. He even joked about playing district football later in life, just for the love of the game.
Fernandes started his career in Italy with Novara, Udinese, and Sampdoria before going back to Sporting in Portugal. His great form there earned him a move to United in January 2020.
It seems likely Fernandes will stay in Europe if he leaves Manchester United, which might rule out moves to Saudi Arabia. Al-Hilal once offered £100 million and a huge wage increase in 2025, but Fernandes chose to keep playing at the highest level.
After his public comments about Carrick, there were rumors of Saudi clubs trying to sign him in January. However, Al-Hilal won’t be one of them because they’ve already filled their foreign player slots after signing Gabriel Martinelli, Ollie Watkins, and Crysencio Summerville from the Premier League.
So, Fernandes will probably stay at Old Trafford until at least next summer, when the club will decide whether to sell him or offer a new contract.
