Premier League had to make a statement after Jayden Bogle didn’t get a red card in the Leeds vs Spurs game.
Tottenham Hotspur fans are really upset after Jayden Bogle didn’t get a red card following a really controversial tackle.
On Saturday afternoon, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur kicked off a busy day of Premier League games at Elland Road. But tension soon grew as some big VAR decisions were questioned, especially after a tough challenge from Jayden Bogle.
During a physical first half with no goals, Bogle made a late tackle on Spurs forward Mathys Tel that caused a lot of drama. As Bogle went for the ball, his foot missed and hit the back of Tel’s leg instead. The referee, John Brooks, didn’t think it deserved a card, so VAR stepped in to review it.
While VAR checked the challenge, Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi was clearly angry, and Tel stayed down for a while with what looked like an Achilles injury. Many were shocked when VAR decided it wasn’t a red card, and both players got back on the pitch. But Tel soon asked to come off, clearly unable to continue.
The Premier League match centre later explained the decision on X, saying: “The referee’s call of no red card to Bogle for the challenge on Tel was checked and confirmed by VAR. VAR confirmed it was a reckless challenge but said there was no serious foul play because of the lack of speed and that Bogle was stepping into the tackle.”
Fans reacted strongly online. One said, “Where’s the red card? That tackle left Tel down!” Another wrote, “The inconsistency in the Premier League is crazy. Bogle should be off by now.” Someone else added, “Bogle didn’t even get a booking after a full-weight hit on Tel’s Achilles. It’s an absolute joke.”
One fan also pointed out that referee Brooks had sent off Xavi Simons for a similar tackle on Virgil van Dijk last December.
This decision came after more controversy earlier when Leeds thought they should get a penalty because Spurs’ Mateus Fernandes touched the ball with his hand in the box. VAR reviewed it, but the Match Centre said the ball hit the top of his arm as he leaned in, in the “green zone,” so it wasn’t counted as handball.
