French player and teammate spend night in police custody after a fight

A France international player and his Clermont teammate were kept by the police overnight after being involved in a fight. Regis Montagne and Lucas Tauzin spent the night in custody after a man was hurt during an altercation in the city of Auvergne.
Montagne has played seven times for the French national team and was part of the squad that won the 2026 Six Nations Championship in March. Tauzin has also represented France, but at the Under-20 level.
They were released after one day because they reportedly acted in self-defense and no charges have been filed against them for now.
According to reports in L’Equipe, both Montagne and Tauzin were attacked by the same man while out in town with their partners. The French publication confirmed with Clermont Auvergne that these two players were involved, with the story first coming from Le Parisien.
Montagne joined the France senior team in the summer of 2025 during the New Zealand tour and played in two Six Nations matches this year. At 25, he hopes to earn more chances to represent France, especially after an important player, Unai Atonio, had to retire suddenly due to a heart problem.
Tauzin, 27, has had a great youth career and was part of Toulouse’s 2024 Champions Cup-winning team. Fans and the club hope he might soon get his first senior international cap.
Clermont have had a two-week break from club rugby since they were not in European competitions. Now, they want to keep up their good form in the Top 14 league this season. The club hopes this will be the last they hear about the incident so that both players can stay focused and help the team as they aim for a playoff spot. Currently, Clermont sits sixth in the league standings.
