Cody Rhodes recently shared his reaction to a “wild” comment from a doctor who checked out the bad injury he got at WrestleMania 42.
The American Nightmare was in another big match, defending his WWE title against his mentor Randy Orton at Allegiant Stadium.
With Pat McAfee teaming up with Orton, things looked tough for Rhodes, but music star Jelly Roll helped by taking McAfee out with a splash through a table.
McAfee came back briefly when the referee counted two after Orton’s RKO, but then Orton hit McAfee with his finishing move, letting Rhodes get the win.
Still, Rhodes didn’t come out unscathed—Orton attacked him and even punted him, leaving Rhodes with a badly swollen eye that was nearly shut.
People immediately worried if he’d be able to keep wrestling in the weeks ahead. One report even said he’d be out “indefinitely.”
He had to cancel a planned appearance at WWE’s fan convention.
But Rhodes showed up on Monday Night Raw at T-Mobile Arena with a black eye, and a few days later, he saw a doctor to find out more about the injury.
On Instagram, he shared a funny but hopeful update: “’You won’t lose the eye…’ has to be the most positive yet absurd thing I’ve ever heard in a doctor’s office.”
According to Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, WWE put Rhodes in concussion protocol just to be safe.
Thankfully, he didn’t have an orbital injury, which could have kept him out for a long time and forced him to give up his title.
He did need three stitches near his eye, though.
Rhodes, a four-time WWE champ, has been a fan favorite ever since he came back at WrestleMania 38 and has been a regular on the shows.
His only long break before this was after he tore his chest muscle but still wrestled with bad bruises in a Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins, then had surgery and was out until the 2023 Royal Rumble.
