Marcus Rashford’s future at Manchester United has taken an interesting turn after news that Barcelona are in talks to sign Newcastle’s star player, Anthony Gordon. Gordon, who is part of England’s World Cup squad, was left out of Newcastle’s team for the last few weeks of the Premier League season, as a summer transfer seems likely. Newcastle didn’t qualify for European football next season, and their manager, Eddie Howe, said Gordon’s absence was partly planned with the future in mind.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have agreed personal terms with Gordon after joining a last-minute competition that also included Liverpool and Bayern Munich. Romano says Barca want to finish the deal quickly and have already started direct talks with Newcastle to make it happen. Gordon mainly plays as a left-sided forward but can also play on the right or as a centre forward, and his ability to play in different positions is probably why the La Liga champions want him.

This potential signing could make people wonder about Rashford’s future, since his loan at Barcelona includes an option to buy for about £26 million. Rashford scored 14 goals and made 10 assists for Barca this season, but for now, he’s expected to go back to Manchester United when his loan ends in June. However, journalist Ben Jacobs says Barcelona are still interested in keeping Rashford even if they sign Gordon. He adds that manager Hansi Flick is open to having both players in the team, and it’s not an either-or situation.

One big difference for Rashford this time is his situation at Manchester United. Last summer, when he was loaned out, the manager Ruben Amorim, who had pushed him out of the first team, has since been replaced by Michael Carrick. Carrick played alongside Rashford at United and hasn’t ruled out bringing him back into the team. “There are decisions to be made in time on certain things,” Carrick told Sky Sports in April. “Marcus is in that situation. Nothing has been decided yet, but it will be at the right time.”
