Manchester United are moving forward with their second signing of the summer, as reports say they’re close to agreeing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson. The Brazilian star is expected to join Old Trafford very soon, becoming Michael Carrick’s first signing as the permanent United manager.

To keep him safe from injury before the move, Ederson didn’t play in Atalanta’s last Serie A game of the season. Since he wasn’t picked for Brazil’s World Cup squad, he can start training with his new United teammates right from the first day of pre-season.

Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas says United are in the final stages of talks with Atalanta for a deal valued at £35 million guaranteed, plus another £3 million in bonuses.

With Casemiro likely to leave this summer and uncertainty over Manuel Ugarte’s future, United might need to bring in up to three new midfielders this transfer window.

According to Pete Hall from the i Paper, United already have their next midfield target: West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes. Club bosses like his talent for controlling the ball across the pitch, and Fernandes reportedly prefers to join United.

Getting a deal done could be easier since West Ham were relegated from the Championship and need to raise up to £180 million by selling players this summer.

Along with Fernandes, star forward Jarrod Bowen might also be a big sale for West Ham. He’s linked to clubs like United and Liverpool. Bowen signed a long-term contract with West Ham in 2023 that keeps him there until 2030, but it’s still unclear if he plans to stay and help the club bounce back or move on.

Bowen missed out on a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad, so his future is a bit up in the air.
