Man United looks set to get a big payday as Mason Greenwood’s next transfer is reportedly confirmed by the club president.

Manchester United are finally set to benefit as Mason Greenwood has agreed to a four-year deal to move on from Marseille.

Greenwood joined Marseille in 2024 for £26.6 million after United decided it was best for him to continue his career elsewhere. Before that, he had a loan spell at Getafe.

In two seasons at Marseille, the 24-year-old scored 48 goals in 81 games. However, reports say his relationship with the club worsened, and he was made available for transfer if the price was right.

AS Roma and Fenerbahce showed strong interest, and it looks like Fenerbahce will get him. Both presidential candidates for the Turkish club, Aziz Yildirim and Hakan Safi, openly want to sign Greenwood. Safi even said that they’ve agreed personal terms with him:

“We have signed a four-year deal with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said. “He has proven himself at the top level in Europe and has agreed to join Fenerbahce during his most valuable years. I promised to bring a star player, and today I am proud to keep that promise.”

When United sold Greenwood two years ago, they wisely added a 50% sell-on clause in his contract. According to journalist Chris Winterburn, this means United will get half the profit on any fee above the £26.6 million Marseille paid.

Marseille want at least £43 million, which would bring them a profit of around £17 million. If that’s true, United stands to earn about £8 million from the transfer. Some reports say United could get half of the total fee, which would be over £20 million.

Fenerbahce and Marseille haven’t agreed on the transfer fee yet, but Marseille’s sporting director, Gregory Lorenzi, said the club is open to offers. He told L’Equipe:

“Greenwood is one of the players we are really thinking about for the future. If an opportunity comes up, of course we will consider it. But we have to balance the club’s position and the player’s wishes to find the best solution for everyone.”

Greenwood left United following his arrest in 2022. He was charged with serious crimes but strongly denied all allegations. The case was dropped after key witnesses pulled out and new evidence came to light.

United carried out their own investigation and said it was agreed the best thing was for Greenwood to continue his career away from Old Trafford.
