Liverpool might bring in Cody Gakpo in an exciting swap deal for their top choice.
Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo might be part of a deal as the Reds chase a top player this summer.
Even though the 2025/26 Premier League season ended just over two weeks ago, things have already started to change at Anfield.
On May 30, Arne Slot was let go as head coach after Liverpool finished fifth last season, a letdown after winning the Premier League in his first year. He’s been replaced by Andoni Iraola, the former Bournemouth manager, who is expected to bring some of his old players with him. Names like Eli Junior Kroupi, Adrian Truffert, Rayan, and Alex Scott have all been linked with moves to Liverpool once the transfer window opens on June 15.
At the same time, some players are likely to leave. Mohamed Salah’s contract ends later this month, and Federico Chiesa might also move on. Andrew Robertson’s transfer to Spurs is already confirmed. Now, it seems Gakpo could be leaving too after three seasons.
Gakpo joined Liverpool in December 2022 after a strong World Cup with the Netherlands. Since then, he’s scored 50 goals and made 23 assists in 180 games, helping Liverpool win the Premier League and Carabao Cup. Despite these good stats, he’s never been a key player in the forward line. TEAMtalk reports that he might be part of a swap deal for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
Diomande is under contract with Leipzig until 2030, and Liverpool are said to be in the best position to sign him, according to The Athletic. But Leipzig says he’s not for sale unless a bid over £112.4 million comes in.
Sources from TEAMtalk say Gakpo could be offered as part of talks, even though Liverpool aren’t actively trying to sell him. Gakpo, who is signed with Liverpool until 2030, is reportedly worried about his playing time under the new coach Iraola and doesn’t want to be behind 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha in the pecking order.
The former PSV player has told the club he won’t accept fewer minutes on the pitch. Last summer, Bayern Munich showed interest in the 27-year-old, and Spurs, Aston Villa, AC Milan, and Atletico Madrid are also reportedly watching him. Turkish clubs Besiktas and Fenerbahce are keeping an eye on the situation too.
