Andoni Iraola shared his thoughts on the big Liverpool transfer as the price hit £100m.
New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola might have already ruled out signing a player who’s been strongly linked with a move to Anfield.
Iraola was officially introduced as the new Reds manager last Thursday, taking over from Arne Slot. He signed a two-year deal, which fits with his habit of agreeing to short-term contracts at the clubs he manages.
Since Iraola left Bournemouth at the end of last season—when his contract ran out—he’s been able to jump straight into his new role without any complications or compensation issues for Liverpool.
Since Iraola’s appointment, Liverpool has been linked to some big-name transfers, including Bournemouth winger Rayan. The Brazil international has a release clause in his contract that drops with each transfer window, starting in January, and is believed to be around £130 million.
Another player catching Liverpool’s eye is Eli Junior Kroupi, also from Bournemouth. Kroupi scored 13 Premier League goals last season, which was his first in English football, under Iraola’s coaching.
However, Kroupi’s situation is a bit tricky. Bournemouth wants to keep other clubs away for another year now that they’ve qualified for the Europa League. Still, according to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal and Manchester City have contacted Kroupi’s agents and might try to sign him early.
Interestingly, Iraola has publicly supported Bournemouth’s position and encouraged Kroupi to stay for another season. He said Kroupi has “special things,” but also needs to improve other parts of his game in training.
While Kroupi scored five goals in his last eight matches—mostly as a starter—he often came off the bench earlier in the season.
Iraola told Bournemouth’s official site in April, “He’s become a much better player for me. I don’t focus on his goals because scoring is something natural for him and he’ll always have it. Instead, I’ve helped him work on other areas, and he’s improved a lot.”
In the past month, Iraola said Kroupi has helped them play with a very attacking lineup because he works hard and helps the team not struggle defensively.
“He’s still very young and it’s his first Premier League season. I’m sure he will play more next season and keep growing. He has huge potential, but I think staying here is the best choice for his development.”
