Manchester United are getting ready to make an offer for Cristian Romero, according to reports. Tottenham Hotspur feel that “the time has come” for the defender to move on, and they’re looking for a replacement who “ticks a lot of boxes.”

Romero has been linked with a move away from Spurs for a while now, and it seems like he might leave soon as other clubs show interest. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have admired the 28-year-old center-back for a long time. Last season, Romero played 32 games in all competitions, and Manchester United are also reportedly interested in signing him.

Trusted Argentine journalist Gastón Edul says that Manchester United want Romero and are working on an offer. So, how much would it cost? Earlier this year, Romero’s father said his son has a “very high release clause” in his Tottenham contract. Victor Romero explained, “He has two more years left and a very high release clause. The club won’t let him go for free; it’s between $50-70 million (£37.8m-£53m).” He added, “They’ll want to get back what they invested.”

It looks like Romero’s time at Tottenham is coming to an end. Former Spurs scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Argentine is expected to leave this summer. “There are doubts about Romero, and they expect him to move on,” Brown said. “People say he’s a good player when he’s available, but his attitude and effort have been a problem.”

Brown also mentioned Brighton’s Van Hecke as someone Tottenham has admired for a while. “I’ve always liked Van Hecke; he’s improved a lot at Brighton,” Brown said. “Tottenham feel it’s time for Romero to go, but they’ll need to replace him since he’s been a regular player. Van Hecke would check a lot of boxes—he’s tall, physical, and good with the ball. It would be a positive step and help De Zerbi bring in his ideas.”

Brighton’s CEO Paul Barber recently confirmed that Tottenham had two bids turned down for center-back Jan Paul van Hecke, who seems interested in the move. “There’s always lots of interest in our best players, especially Jan Paul,” Barber told talkSPORT. “We’ve been clear this interest has been ongoing for a while and comes from many clubs. We rejected two recent bids from Tottenham.”

He added, “It has to be right for us and the player. We need to make smart decisions for our team and support Fabian [Hurzeler], who faces another big season.”

The 26-year-old Van Hecke could join Marco Senesi, who is expected to join Spurs for free this summer.
