Marcus Rashford has a £40 million clause in his Manchester United contract that any club can trigger—except Liverpool and Manchester City, it’s been revealed.

Rashford’s future is still a bit unclear. Last summer, he joined Barcelona on a season-long loan and played regularly for the La Liga winners, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions.

At one point, it looked like Barcelona might sign him permanently. But after they signed Anthony Gordon, who also plays on the left wing, from Newcastle United last month, their plans seemed to change.

Barcelona decided not to activate the €30 million (£25.9m) option to buy Rashford, so for now, he’s set to return to Manchester United next month, according to The Athletic.

The report also says Rashford, who is 28, has a £40 million release clause that can be used by any club except Liverpool and Manchester City.

Several Premier League teams are interested in him, but Rashford would prefer to stay and finish the remaining two years of his contract at United rather than move to another English club.

He has made over 400 appearances for Manchester United, his boyhood club, and according to a January report from The Telegraph, Michael Carrick would warmly welcome him back at Old Trafford.

Earlier this month, The i Paper reported that up to five clubs, including Newcastle United and Aston Villa, are keeping an eye on Rashford ahead of the summer transfer window.

If he joins Newcastle, he would be replacing Anthony Gordon. Rashford also spent part of the 2024/25 season on loan at Villa, managed by Unai Emery.

When Rashford found out he was selected for England’s World Cup squad, he thanked Emery for helping him get back into the team.

Meanwhile, Manchester United recently agreed to sign Ederson from Serie A’s Atalanta for around £35 million, with an extra £4 million in add-ons. Ederson is expected to join Michael Carrick’s squad soon.

Besides Ederson, United are also linked to West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. According to The Sun, United are leading the race to sign Fernandes, and Real Madrid, who have also watched the player, expect him to join Old Trafford.

Arsenal has cooled their interest in the Portugal international.

The report says West Ham value Fernandes around £80 million, but United hope to reach a deal after West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.
