Drake surprises fans by sharing his ‘reverse curse’ World Cup bet
Rap superstar Drake has shared one of his most unusual bets yet—a “reverse curse” World Cup wager. Besides being a huge music star, Drake is also famous for seemingly “cursing” athletes and teams. Whenever he’s been seen with a sports star or supported them, and they ended up losing, fans have joked it was because of him.
This joke grew even bigger when he bet £149,000 on Jake Paul to beat Anthony Joshua in Miami last December. After Paul lost badly and even broke his jaw, Drake lost money again when he bet on Paul to beat Tommy Fury in 2023. He’s also lost big on UFC fights and even dropped $300,000 in 2024 betting on Canada to beat Argentina in the Copa America semi-final.
But lately, Drake’s been having better luck. He bet $770,000 on Canada to beat South Africa in their first ever World Cup knockout game. Jesse Marsch’s team made it to the round of 16 after Stephen Eustaquio scored a last-minute winner at SoFi Stadium. Now, without their home advantage as co-hosts, Canada faces a strong Morocco team in Houston.
This time, Drake decided to try something different. To avoid the usual jinx, he placed a tiny bet on Morocco to win, backing them with Stake. He shared the bet slip on Instagram, showing he only put down $1 and could win just $1.41 if Morocco made it to the quarter-finals again. He wrote, “Won the last time… gonna try reverse curse strategy @stake.”
Fans were surprised by the small bet and the fact he went against his own team. One said, “No way you are betting against Canada.” Another cheered, “Reverse jinx in full effect, let’s go Canada!” Someone else was shocked, “No way bro staked one dollar,” and another commented, “Bro, against your country.”
At the last World Cup, Drake placed a $1 million bet on Argentina beating France in the final. Even though Lionel Messi finally became world champion, Drake’s bet didn’t pay off because Argentina won on penalties after a 3-3 draw—while he had predicted a win in regular time.
Drake attended his first World Cup game in person on Thursday, spotted at BMO Field in Toronto for Portugal’s dramatic win over Croatia. The game featured a last-minute equalizer for Croatia that was overturned by VAR due to a controversial offside call. After the match, Drake took a photo with Portugal legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who signed a shirt for Drake’s son, Adonis.
Drake also got the match-winner Goncalo Ramos to sign a shirt for his fiancée, Margarida Amaral Domingues. She shared it on Instagram, tagging both Drake and Goncalo, and wrote, “You are the best,” with a heart emoji.
