Wimbledon starts enforcing rules and hands out punishments to 11 players
This year at Wimbledon, 11 players from the men’s and women’s singles events were fined by the tournament officials for breaking the rules.
The exciting Round of 16 matches continue on Monday at SW19, featuring well-known players like Jasmine Paolini, Alexander Zverev, and Madison Keys. The last British player left in the main draws, Arthur Fery, is also playing against Spain’s world number five, Alex De Minaur. Fery, who was born in France, won his first Wimbledon main draw match last year after trying twice before. He will face Bulgarian wildcard Grigor Dimitrov in round four.
Over the weekend, Wimbledon staff have been busy enforcing rules. Fifteen-year-old Ida Wobker was disqualified from her girls’ singles match for a rule violation, meaning she had to leave the tournament. In the men’s and women’s singles, most fines were for minor issues, but 11 players have still been penalized since qualifying matches began.
The largest fine, $7,500, went to French player Corentin Moutet (ranked 36th) for racquet abuse during his first-round loss to Marcos Giron from the USA. Thanasi Kokkinakis also received a $7,500 fine for unsportsmanlike behavior after a tough five-set match against 10th seed Alexander Bublik. Damir Dzumhur, who lost to Arthur Fery in round one, was fined the same amount for similar conduct.
Hamad Medjedovic was fined $5,000 for using an audible bad word during his match. French doubles star Pierre-Hugues Herbert, a five-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, was fined $3,500 for racquet abuse after he and his partner Quentin Halys lost early in the doubles event.
Two female players were also fined. Seventeen-year-old Mia Pohankova, who won the Wimbledon girls’ singles title in 2025, lost in the first round of qualifying and was fined $2,500 for using an audible bad word. Germany’s Noma Noha Akugue received the same fine for a similar reason during her second-round qualifying loss.
