Jordan Henderson’s dad opens up about the shocking injury he got against Mexico
Jordan Henderson’s dad, Brian, has shared more about the bad arm injury Jordan got after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup last 16.
Jordan didn’t play in Mexico City, sitting out as England finished the last 47 minutes with 10 players after Jarell Quansah got a straight red card. Despite that, Jordan still picked up a yellow card after a scuffle on the sidelines.
But the worst thing happened when Jordan tried to jump over the advertising boards after the team went to celebrate with fans. He slipped, fell, and landed hard on his arm.
He got quick medical help, with his teammates and staff around him, and was given oxygen before being taken to a hospital in Mexico City on a stretcher.
England’s manager, Thomas Tuchel, called the injury “really, really bad.” Later, it was confirmed Jordan broke his wrist and would need surgery, meaning he can’t continue in the World Cup.
Jordan posted on social media, but didn’t mention the fall. He wrote, “A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”
His England teammates like Marcus Rashford, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Anthony Gordon, and Elliot Anderson sent him messages of support.
It’s not clear if the 36-year-old will return home or stay with the team. But Brian Henderson revealed just how bad the injury is. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he said Jordan “completely smashed” his left forearm, and a top surgeon who has worked with NFL players is set to operate.
“I thought he’d just fallen and maybe scraped his wrist,” Brian said. “I didn’t realize it was that serious until they showed Harry Kane being interviewed and a trolley with Jordan on it went by. He had oxygen on. I stayed up all night waiting for news.”
Reports say Tuchel will now warn players not to jump over advertising boards to avoid injuries like Jordan’s.
In a BBC Sport interview after the game, Tuchel said, “He injured his wrist. He is in hospital, so it’s quite serious. It’s hard to accept Jordan is not with us now. I don’t know what the next steps are.”
Unfortunately, Jordan can’t be replaced in the England squad because FIFA only allows player swaps before the team’s first World Cup game.
