Man Utd are nearly done with another transfer just hours after agreeing to pay £50m for Andrey Santos.
Manchester United are getting close to signing a free agent, just a few hours after news came out that they agreed on a £50 million deal with Chelsea to buy Andrey Santos. Santos is about to join Michael Carrick’s team in a deal worth £48 million plus an extra £2 million in add-ons. He’s getting ready for a medical at United as they look to strengthen their midfield.
With Casemiro leaving and Manuel Ugarte out long-term due to an ACL injury at the World Cup, United really need to boost their central midfield. Besides midfield, they’re also working on their goalkeeping options. Andre Onana has gone on a season-long loan to Trabzonspor in Turkey, and Altay Bayindir is expected to leave as well.
Earlier this month, it was reported that United were thinking about signing Karl Darlow as a backup goalkeeper. The 35-year-old left Leeds this summer after his contract ended and played every game for Daniel Farke’s side from mid-January to the end of the season, taking over from Lucas Perri. Everton were also interested, but United are close to finishing the deal, The Athletic says. They’re in the “advanced stages” of bringing him to Old Trafford.
Darlow fits what United wanted—a goalie with Premier League experience who can back up Lammens as the team prepares for the Champions League. Some fans thought Radek Vitek might get a chance. The 22-year-old Czech keeper, who did well on loan at Bristol City in the Championship, is likely to leave United on loan or for good.
Meanwhile, Tom Heaton recently signed a one-year contract extension and will keep playing an important leadership role in the team. The 40-year-old joined Manchester United in 2021 and said, “It is a huge honour to continue to represent Manchester United. I am really excited to help the team push forward and compete for the biggest honours.”
