Manchester United have shown fresh interest in Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, according to reports from Brazil, after his €45 million (£38.3m) transfer to Atletico Madrid fell through at the last moment.

On Friday evening, it was revealed that Ederson’s planned move to United won’t happen, as the club “changed their plans,” according to Fabrizio Romano. Romano tweeted, “Ederson to Manchester United, deal OFF and considered as collapsed as Man Utd informed Atalanta. Atalanta believe Ederson is 100% fit and will welcome the midfielder back as part of their squad.”

Ederson is reportedly dealing with a knee injury. After Brazil’s exit from the World Cup, United wanted him to have extra medical tests before deciding on a £35 million deal plus £4 million in add-ons. It now seems that deal is off, but the club is actively searching for other options, according to Brazilian news outlet Globo.

Globo says United have “signalled” their interest in Wolves’ Joao Gomes after they “gave up” on Ederson following medical checks.

United reportedly got back in touch with Gomes at the end of last season, but by then, his move to Atletico Madrid was already planned. However, talks with his agent Jorge Mendes broke down at the last minute, causing the Atletico deal to fall through.

In fact, Atletico had already agreed on the transfer fee (€45 million/£38.3m), Gomes’ salary, and contract length, Globo adds. But the Spanish club’s deal with Mendes also involved Bernardo Silva—who ended up at Real Madrid. This situation upset Atletico and led to Gomes’ transfer being cancelled.

United have already reached out to Wolves about prices and possible deals, and Liverpool are reportedly interested too.

Back in May, the 25-year-old was voted Wolves’ Players’ Player of the Season after playing a lot for the team, which was recently relegated. Since moving from Brazilian club Flamengo in 2023 for about £15 million, Gomes has played 130 games for Wolves, scoring eight goals and making six assists.

Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha, who played with Gomes at Wolves, compared him to Casemiro. “He is a bit older now, but I mention Casemiro just to show how far Joao Gomes could go,” Cunha said. “Joao is very humble and works hard. Great teams come your way when you do that. He’s amazing on the pitch. I feel safe when he’s behind me. He also played well for the national team.”
