Man Utd’s transfer target shares a ‘very clear’ message on social media just hours after Ederson deal fell through
Ederson’s move to Manchester United has been put on hold, and shortly after the news came out, one of Michael Carrick’s targets shared a message on social media.
Ederson was expected to join Man United this summer in a deal worth £35 million plus £4 million in add-ons. The 26-year-old had agreed on personal terms with the Premier League giants and was ready to sign a four-year contract with an option for another year. The transfer was supposed to be finalized after Brazil’s World Cup exit, with just a medical left to complete.
But on Friday evening, Fabrizio Romano shared on X that the deal is off. Another report suggested a knee injury Ederson might have led United to stop the move.
Now, Manchester United have shifted their focus to Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. The club has admired the 25-year-old for a while, as he’s become one of the Premier League’s top ball-winning midfielders since joining Wolves in January 2023.
Interestingly, Gomes was close to joining Atletico Madrid for around €45 million (£38.3 million) and had already agreed on his salary and contract. However, Atletico’s deal with super agent Jorge Mendes involving Bernardo Silva, who eventually joined Real Madrid, upset them, and Gomes’ move was cancelled.
After the Atletico move fell through, Gomes posted a hopeful message on X, saying, “I am absolutely certain that God has the best in store for me,” with a praying hands emoji.
Gomes is still at Wolves, who are now preparing for a season in the Championship after being relegated. It’s unlikely he’ll stay with Wolves in the lower division, even after the Atletico deal didn’t happen.
United’s interest in Gomes points to a possible route back to the Premier League, where he hopes to play Champions League football. His former Wolves teammate, Matheus Cunha, thinks Gomes plays in a style similar to Casemiro, who left Man United for free after four years this summer.
“He is a bit older now, but I mention Casemiro just to show where Joao Gomes could reach,” said Cunha, who joined Manchester United from Wolves last summer and might see Gomes follow him. Cunha praised Gomes as humble and hardworking, saying good things come to players like him.
“He’s amazing on the field. I feel confident knowing he’s behind me. He even played very well for Brazil,” Cunha added.
All signs suggest Gomes could be the kind of player Manchester United need going forward.
