Argentina’s last-minute 2-1 win over England in the World Cup semi-finals means a 44-year streak will end during Sunday’s final. Fans across England and Argentina have been on the edge of their seats.
England took the lead in the 55th minute with a great goal from Anthony Gordon, thanks to a perfect cross from Morgan Rogers. This goal brought the Three Lions closer to their second-ever World Cup final, where they would face Spain.
But it wasn’t meant to be for Tuchel’s team. Late goals from Enzo Fernandez in the 85th minute and substitute Lautaro Martinez in stoppage time (92nd minute) sent Argentina to their third final in four tournaments.
Martinez’s goal also kept Inter Milan’s amazing 44-year streak alive, with a player in every World Cup final from 1982 to 2026. On the other hand, England’s loss means Bayern’s 44-year record of having a player in every World Cup final since 1982 will end, as Harry Kane won’t be playing.
England will now play France in the bronze medal match in Miami on Saturday, July 18.
Right after the loss, experts shared their thoughts. Former England striker Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport: “We were in a great spot, but then we didn’t know what to do. We sat back and let them take control. They created chances, and then we broke down. It’s really disappointing.”
Alan Shearer added: “I think the better team won. You have to be honest about it. Argentina’s reaction was fantastic—they hit the post a few times too. England got lucky for a bit, but Argentina never panicked and stuck to their game plan. Their choices in substitutions worked well. They deserve to be in the final, even if it’s hard to say.”
