Marc Guehi jumps into Lionel Messi’s interview and shares an honest comment after Argentina’s win over England.
Marc Guehi headed straight for Lionel Messi as he walked through the mixed zone at Atlanta Stadium after Wednesday’s intense World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina.
Argentina’s team, La Albiceleste, will face Spain in the final after winning 2-1 in a tough and heated match. The first half was full of fouls – 19 in total, with Argentina responsible for 12. Giuliano Simeone was involved in almost half of those fouls but didn’t get a yellow card.
After the game, tensions didn’t cool down. Jude Bellingham was seen tapping Valentin Barco on the back of the head, which led to more pushing and shoving. Nicolas Otamendi joined in too, but James Trafford and Dean Henderson stepped in to calm things down. Morgan Rodgers also got involved as tempers flared.
Despite the fiery game, Marc Guehi showed great sportsmanship by walking up to Messi while he was doing an interview with Argentine TV. Guehi said in Spanish, “Good luck in the final.” Messi paused his interview, smiled, and replied, “Thanks, see you.”
After the match, Guehi told reporters that England should have kept attacking after scoring first. Anthony Gordon scored in the 55th minute, but England then played too defensively, giving Argentina room to press forward. Between Gordon’s goal and Argentina’s late winner by Lautaro Martinez, England only had the ball 12% of the time.
“We should have kept pushing,” Guehi said. “After scoring, it felt like we just wanted to defend.” When asked if this team could win a trophy in the future, Guehi said, “I don’t know. It’s hard to look ahead right now. We’re just feeling disappointed.”
There’s been a lot of criticism of coach Thomas Tuchel’s decisions, but the FA will still support him, ESPN reports. FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said, “It’s heartbreaking to be so close. The players and Thomas gave everything today, and the whole team worked incredibly hard. I want to thank them all and our amazing fans here and back home. We felt your support every step of the way, and we’re all so disappointed not to go further.”
