Liverpool is expected to sign a ‘special’ player who really stood out at the World Cup.
Liverpool are being tipped to sign one of the World Cup’s standout players this summer as they look to boost their squad ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Earlier this week, new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola said in his first press conference that the team “need more” players after several key stars left recently. Andy Robertson left at the end of his contract to join Spurs, while Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate—who’s heading to Real Madrid—have also gone.
While Víctor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet have joined Liverpool so far, Iraola’s squad still needs more depth before pre-season starts. “We have to get ready because a tough season with injuries and other challenges will come,” Iraola said. “We need enough players to meet the demands of the competition.”
Liverpool will also miss Hugo Ekitike in the early weeks as he recovers from an Achilles injury, and Conor Bradley and Geovanni Leoni are out long-term too.
So who are they linked with? Reports say Liverpool have renewed interest in Roma’s Manu Kone, who’s caught attention with his great World Cup performances for France.
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock thinks Kone would be a perfect fit for the team. He told SPORTbible, “I’d love to see Manu Kone at Liverpool. He’s great on the ball but also tough and physical. He’s exactly what Liverpool need—a midfielder who can boss the game.”
Warnock also pointed out that Kone’s height would help Liverpool, as many of their recent signings are smaller players. “You need players who can score headers and clear the ball in set-piece situations. Kone brings that.”
Warnock also praised young Mexican star Gilberto Mora from Liga MX side Tijuana. At just 17, Mora made an impression for Mexico at the World Cup and has a bright future. “He’s so comfortable on the ball and plays with real maturity for his age,” Warnock said.
After watching many World Cup games as a BBC commentator, Warnock said one player stood out the most: Michael Olise. “He can change a game with his speed and skill, beating opponents and creating chances. If I were a manager, he’s the player I’d want to sign right now.”
