Spain and Argentina will face each other in the 24th World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey on Sunday (July 19). Both teams got through tough semi-finals against France and England. While coaches Luis de la Fuente and Lionel Scaloni are getting their teams ready for what promises to be an exciting game, FIFA may need to make a last-minute decision.
Recently, officials in New York and New Jersey issued an air quality health alert because smoke from wildfires has covered the area. Wildfires in Canada have caused a haze over New York, and officials are advising people to stay indoors if possible. Despite this, Spain trained outside on Thursday (July 16). Argentina hasn’t trained there yet but will do so on Friday (July 17).
A dancer who practiced at the stadium on Thursday shared her worries through her father: “She says the air feels heavy, and it’s hard to dance out there.”
Earlier, on Wednesday (July 15), a National Women’s Soccer League game between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit was affected by poor air quality. They took two breaks each half to protect players, following league rules. Washington Spirit player Trinity Rodman said, “The air quality was rough. Both teams were like, ‘another break, another break.’”
During the 2026 World Cup, FIFA will have hydration breaks every half no matter the weather. But if the bad air continues, FIFA might have to add more breaks like the NWSL does.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul asked everyone to stay indoors and stay safe, saying: “Smoke from Canadian wildfires is making the air worse. We’re working with local groups to watch conditions and give out masks to help protect those who need it most. Please stay updated and take care of yourself and your loved ones.”
Also, a Chicago Fire game against Vancouver Whitecaps was postponed on Thursday because of the poor air quality in Chicago.
