Fans experience a historic moment as two players match an amazing record in just minutes!
It was a really special day at The Open Championship when two players tied the lowest score ever in a men’s major, just minutes apart. Lucas Herbert seemed to be the star of the weekend when he shot an amazing 62 in the second round on Friday. But then Sam Burns matched that incredible score later the same day.
Both of them matched a record also held by Brandon Grace, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, and Shane Lowry. What’s even more interesting is that, except for Grace’s 62 at Birkdale in 2017, every time someone scored 62 in a major, another player did it too during the same event.
Fowler scored 62 at the 2023 US Open, the same weekend Schauffele did it for the first time. Then, a year later, both Schauffele and Lowry hit 62 at the 2024 PGA Championship. So it felt just right that Herbert’s amazing round was followed by Burns’ equally great performance.
Even though Herbert and Burns made history at Royal Birkdale, it doesn’t guarantee they will win the tournament. Out of the five times someone scored that low before, only Schauffele went on to win, at the 2024 PGA Championship.
After the second round, Herbert led with a fantastic score of eight under par, with Burns close behind at five under. Both have a great chance to fight for the title this weekend but know that an early lead doesn’t mean everything in a major.
Herbert almost made it even more special—he missed a five-foot putt on the last hole that would have made him the only player with a score of 61.
“I’m a bit of a golf nerd, so I know all the records and numbers,” he said after his round. “I don’t play all four majors every year, so when I do get a chance to play, and I got off to a hot start on a par 70 course, it was hard not to think about the record. It was fun to just keep playing my game and enjoy the moment.”
