As the final big golf event of the year, The Open promises some exciting links golf under the sunny skies of Royal Birkdale. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is the favorite to win again in 2025, even though he missed the cut last week at the Scottish Open for the first time in almost four years.
He’ll be competing against strong players like Masters champ Rory McIlroy, who last won The Open back in 2014 at Royal Liverpool and is in great shape after tying for seventh at the Scottish Open. These two stars, along with others, are all hoping to win The Open and take home the record prize of $3.2 million (£2.4 million).

As the oldest golf tournament in the world, The Open draws fans from everywhere. Over 300,000 people are expected to watch the action over four days in Southport (July 16-19), and everyone has to follow the rules.
Nick Faldo already spoke out against the bad behavior from some fans during the 2025 Ryder Cup, where players like Shane Lowry and McIlroy faced rude insults from a few people in the crowd.
Because of past issues, the R&A put a strict ‘zero tolerance’ rule in place to make sure everyone behaves well. They even shared a code of conduct before the tournament started, along with a list of items that fans aren’t allowed to bring into Royal Birkdale.
