Fernando Alonso responds to F1 retirement talk with an exciting promise
Fernando Alonso has shared an update about his F1 future amid ongoing talks that he might retire after this season. After the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend, Formula One will take a four-week break for summer.
F1 fans are excited for the sport to come back with the Dutch Grand Prix on August 23. Meanwhile, rumors about the 2027 season are already buzzing. Every summer, teams start planning for next year, working on driver deals and new signings—some even get announced during the break.
The 2027 season is expected to bring big changes since 16 of the 22 current drivers might not have contracts by the end of 2026. One of the biggest stories is about four-time champion Max Verstappen, who might switch from Red Bull to McLaren. But Alonso, a seasoned driver at 44, is also thinking about his future, especially given Aston Martin’s tough year.
Even though there was a lot of excitement for 2026 after Adrian Newey joined Aston Martin, the team has struggled this season. Alonso has only scored one point in 10 races, and the team’s results have been disappointing. But before the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alonso made it clear that this season’s struggles won’t decide his future plans.
“My decision is not about how we’ve done this year,” he said. “We got off to a rough start. I can’t decide my future based on this year’s results because it doesn’t show the team’s true potential—it’s much higher than what we’ve seen.”
Instead, Alonso says what really matters is the new rules for the 2027 season. He has been one of the most vocal critics of this year’s rule changes and said they’ve affected how much he enjoys driving the cars.
“My decision about next year really depends on the rules,” Alonso explained. “Driving these cars at tracks like Spa or Silverstone last race isn’t what I imagine for my future. So we’ll see.”
After much criticism of the new rules, F1’s governing body, the FIA, has already announced some changes for next year. For example, there will be a shift in how power is shared between the combustion engine and the battery, with the engine getting a boost.
It’s still unclear if these rule changes will convince Alonso to keep racing or if we could be watching the final chapters of his amazing F1 career.
