Man Utd’s thoughts on hiring Julian Nagelsmann to take over from Michael Carrick have been shared

Manchester United’s director of recruitment likes Julian Nagelsmann, but reports say it’s unlikely he’ll replace Michael Carrick. On Monday morning, United’s CEO Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox met to talk about Carrick’s future after the team’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth.
There’s a lot of uncertainty about what the club will do next, with big names like Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, and Julian Nagelsmann all being linked to the job. Wilcox is said to prefer someone with Premier League experience, like Howe, who impressed at Bournemouth before moving to Newcastle. Meanwhile, United’s recruitment head Christopher Vivell is a big fan of Nagelsmann, having worked with him at RB Leipzig.
However, The Athletic reports that people close to the club think it’s unlikely Nagelsmann will be chosen if Carrick is let go. Carrick arrived at the training ground on Monday afternoon and is believed to have watched a behind-closed-doors under-21 game against Hull City, spending about three hours there. Wilcox and Berrada were also present and are thought to have discussed Carrick’s future, but nothing is clear yet before their Premier League game against Chelsea on Saturday.
When asked if he expected to be sacked after the Bournemouth loss, Carrick said he had a short talk with Berrada and Wilcox but isn’t expecting anything specific. “I totally understand the situation. I’m just carrying on as normal,” he said. “I love this club and always try to do what’s best for the team, no matter what happens. I’m not expecting anything.”
Carrick, who was made permanent head coach in May after a good run as interim, added: “They (Omar and Jason) came down briefly after the game, but there was nothing unusual.” For now, Carrick is set to lead United when they play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, October 31.
