Liverpool is thinking about signing a World Cup star, while Andoni Iraola talks about having problems with injuries in defense.

Liverpool might be making a move for a Premier League defender who stood out during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This summer, Andoni Iraola has already brought in Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, but the Reds are expected to sign more players before their first game against Newcastle on August 23.

After the 2025/26 season, Liverpool saw some big names leave, like Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate. That season, they finished fifth and didn’t win any trophies, which led to Arne Slot being let go.

Earlier this summer, Liverpool were linked to RB Leipzig’s left-winger Yan Diomande, but it looks like he will join Real Madrid instead, despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain. Now, Liverpool have shifted their focus to PSG and France winger Bradley Barcola, and the clubs are reportedly talking about a £128.5 million deal.

Bournemouth’s young star Rayan is also a dream signing for Liverpool, with Iraola wanting to work again with the talented Brazilian after their good time together at Bournemouth.

While Liverpool are likely to add attackers, Iraola has said the defense feels a bit thin right now. Joe Gomez got injured in a pre-season friendly against Sunderland, leaving Virgil van Dijk as the only fit centre-back. Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are still recovering. Jacquet is expected back near the end of Liverpool’s US tour.

After the match, Iraola said, “The worst news was Joe’s injury. We had been lucky without injuries in training, but losing Joe right away is tough. Our defense, especially at centre-back and right-back, is very thin, so we’re looking for solutions.”

Now, according to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are thinking about going for Aston Villa and England centre-back Ezri Konsa. The 28-year-old played in all eight of England’s World Cup games and impressed under Unai Emery at Villa, where they won the Europa League and finished fourth in the Premier League last season.

Konsa, who is also liked by Arsenal, is under contract with Villa until 2028. Liverpool were also linked to John Stones, but he seems close to moving to Inter Milan in Serie A. Despite interest from other clubs, Villa want to give Konsa a new contract.
