Wimbledon commentator makes big claim about Emma Raducanu retiring

Former British number one and Wimbledon commentator Andrew Castle thinks Emma Raducanu might surprise everyone by retiring unexpectedly.

Emma, who won the 2021 US Open as a qualifier—the first player to do that in the Open Era—has had a tough time since that amazing win. She hasn’t gone past the fourth round in any Grand Slam since then and has only made it past the second round four times in 14 tournaments.

Her latest loss was to Donna Vekic in the Queen’s final, where she was beaten 6-0, 7-6 in less than two hours. Shortly after, Emma pulled out of her opening matches in Nottingham and Wimbledon, saying she was injured. She’s been dealing with a stress fracture in her shin and recently brought back her coach Andrew Richardson, who helped her win the US Open. It seems like her career has been full of ups and downs lately.

All these injury problems, big expectations, and some off-court issues have led Castle to make a surprising prediction about her future—he thinks she might retire. He said, “I wouldn’t be shocked if one day, out of the blue, she just decided she’s had enough. She owes it only to herself and her family.” But he also hopes she will keep playing.

Castle doesn’t have inside info on Emma’s team, but he understands the pressure UK athletes face to bring success to their country. Emma, now 23, teamed up with HSBC a year after her win, and once said that if she hadn’t gone into tennis, she might have chosen a career in finance.

Having already won a Grand Slam, something even Andy Murray achieved only three times, and earning well financially, Castle’s guess about retirement isn’t far-fetched. But re-hiring her old coach shows she’s still fighting, even if injuries remain a big challenge.

Early reports suggest Emma might not play in the 2026 US Open, which starts on August 30. Fans will be watching closely to see what she decides next.
