Premier League clubs will have to pay a £100,000 fine if they don’t follow the new strict rule.
A new Premier League rule means clubs could be fined £100,000 if they don’t follow it, according to reports. The English top league kicks off this Friday night, with Arsenal hosting newly-promoted Coventry at the Emirates Stadium.
Right before the new season starts, it’s been revealed that the Premier League has introduced a tough new rule. The league is putting a big spotlight on cybersecurity for the first time. Now, all 20 clubs have to follow mandatory cybersecurity rules.
Although clubs won’t lose points, they could face fines of up to £100,000 if they break the rules. The Premier League can also take action through its own disciplinary process or send cases to an independent panel.
The new cybersecurity rules cover things like backups, incident response, risk management, and security checks. Clubs have to meet certain steps and deadlines, including completing the first stage by April 30, 2027, just before the season ends.
There’s also a deadline for a final check of each club’s compliance, after a mid-season review that happens before January 10. If a club isn’t meeting the rules at the mid-season check, they’ll have 28 days to send a plan explaining how they’ll catch up. These measures aim to protect clubs from cyber attacks. More rules will follow in the two years after.
The clubs voted to approve these cybersecurity plans at the Annual General Meeting in June, where it was a hot topic.
Another interesting change coming to the Premier League is that fans will soon get to see the full decisions made by the Key Match Incidents Panel about controversial calls during games. Right now, the panel’s views are shared only with clubs and rarely leak out, but starting in the 2026/27 season, their full reports will be made public.
The panel includes three former players and coaches, plus representatives from the Premier League and the referees’ group Pro Ref. All their comments will be available for fans to see.
Also, the Premier League Match Centre will add new features, including official quotes from match officials explaining decisions after games, and the popular Ref Cam will now include audio for the first time.
