Bayern Munich boss shares the real reason why Jamal Musiala collapsed twice in just days
Vincent Kompany has shared the reason behind Jamal Musiala’s two fainting episodes during Bayern Munich’s pre-season, which happened just days apart. The 23-year-old star first collapsed during a friendly against Leipzig last weekend, then again in the 4-2 win over Heidenheim on Tuesday. Luckily, Musiala was able to leave the field on his own both times, with little help from the medical team.
After Tuesday’s match, Musiala took to Instagram to explain what was going on. He said he was diagnosed with “brief, temporary episodes of absence” but reassured fans that this won’t affect his football career. He also shared that these episodes come from a neurological issue, but they’re “easily treatable.” Musiala emphasized that there are no other health risks, and he’s working closely with Bayern to stay healthy.
Kompany, Musiala’s coach, gave more details before today’s Supercup game against Borussia Dortmund. He said the fainting spells were probably caused by a change in Musiala’s treatment. “I spoke with Jamal, and he told me it’s okay to talk about it,” said Kompany. He explained that Musiala tried a new approach to his treatment, which caused some side effects. Kompany said it’s normal to adjust treatments and that these changes likely made the episodes more noticeable.
This was supported by Bayern’s sporting director, Eberl, who confirmed that Musiala switched his medication before the Leipzig and Heidenheim games. Eberl said, “We’ve known about this all last season. The players knew about it too. For us, it’s just part of daily life.” He added they’re fully supporting Musiala and will continue to do so.
It seems these fainting spells were not new health problems but flare-ups caused by changes in Musiala’s medication. When asked if Musiala will be a key player for Bayern in the 2026-27 season, Kompany was confident. “I’m completely calm,” he said. “I expect Jamal to bounce back strongly. He now has everything he needs to perform, and I can see he’s made big progress.”
Musiala was out for six months from July 2025 to January 2026 but is expected to reach his best form again this season. Despite injuries last year, he still managed 11 goal contributions in 24 games. In the Bundesliga, helping Bayern win the title, he had seven goal involvements in just 685 minutes on the pitch.
