What Man Utd fans at Hull did right after the game says a lot after the 2-0 loss.
Manchester United fans didn’t hide how they felt after their team lost 2-0 to Hull City in the first game of the Premier League season.
Hull, who just moved up to the Premier League, scored two goals early on—Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy found the net within the first 38 minutes, giving Hull a perfect start to their season. United struggled to handle high balls, especially during set-pieces, which is how both Hull goals came.
On the other side, Michael Carrick’s team barely threatened in the first half. Their best chance was a close shot by Patrick Dorgu that went just wide. The second half didn’t get better, and United ended up with only their third loss in 18 matches since Carrick took charge again.
After the match, fans who traveled to Hull showed exactly how disappointed they were. Reporter Chris Wheeler from Daily Mail caught the United players going over to thank the fans, but many had already left. A PA announcement said all trains back to Manchester were canceled, which might explain some of the empty seats, but still, quite a few fans walked out during the players’ applause.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Carrick said the team has some things to work on. He admitted it was tough going behind early and playing against a strong home team like Hull. “We had chances, but we lacked the spark to finish them or create more,” he said. “Of course, we’re very disappointed, but we’ll keep working hard during the week and get stronger as a team.”
When asked about conceding two goals from set-pieces, he said it was frustrating but also something they’ve usually done well. “We know we need to improve, but one game won’t change everything. It’s just the first match of the season, so while it hurts, it doesn’t change the direction we’re going. We’ll stay focused and come back stronger next week.”
