Not only did the Chelsea forward shine on the field against Fulham on Monday night, but he also kept things cool and relaxed during his post-match chat with Sky Sports. The 24-year-old, who had some tough times with injuries and form last season, made it clear he’s ready to go this year. He showed that at Craven Cottage, where Chelsea’s attack looked fresh, especially with new signing Morgan Rogers joining the front line.
In fact, Chelsea’s front three — Rogers, Palmer, and Joao Pedro — all scored in a thrilling 3-2 win. Palmer had a standout game, scoring Chelsea’s third goal and putting up some impressive stats: five successful dribbles, seven ball recoveries, and winning 10 duels. He also created three chances and set up Joao Pedro’s first goal. According to Opta, only one other player since 2006-07 has matched all those numbers in a Premier League match.
When asked in the interview how ready he feels for the season ahead, Palmer smiled and said, “Did you not watch the game? I’m joking, but yeah, I’m ready. Last season was tough with injuries, but I worked really hard over the summer to come back stronger.”
He added, “I’ve had to focus a lot on staying fit and preventing injuries by working hard every day. I know the talent I have, and I’m confident I can keep putting in performances like that.”
After being left out of England’s World Cup squad by Thomas Tuchel, Palmer said watching from the sidelines actually helped him get ready for this season. “I’m usually not an emotional guy, but over the summer I took time to rest and recharge. Now, I’m ready and hungry to prove myself,” he shared.
Palmer’s great game didn’t go unnoticed — even new Chelsea coach Xabi Alonso praised him. “I really enjoyed his performance. He played with responsibility and confidence but also had the freedom to express himself on the pitch. It’s important to me to get the best out of Cole,” Alonso said.
He added, “I’m happy for him because, if we want to be a strong team, we need a top form Cole Palmer.”
