Manchester United accidentally broke Premier League kit rules during their 2-0 loss to Hull City by not showing the league badge on both sleeves. Since their sleeves didn’t have any sponsor logos, Premier League rules say the badge must be on both arms. But the kits worn by Michael Carrick’s team didn’t follow this, something sharp-eyed fans noticed during the TNT Sports broadcast.
Manchester United, who have had the most games on TV this season, lost 2-0 to newly-promoted Hull City at the MKM Stadium. According to a report from the Daily Mail, the team will have the Premier League badge on both sleeves for their next match against Ipswich Town.
The Red Devils don’t have a sleeve sponsor right now because their £20 million-a-year deal with DXC Technology, which started in 2022, ended before this season. The club has faced some action over this kit mistake, but neither Manchester United nor the Premier League has said anything publicly yet. SPORTbible has reached out to the club for comment.
The punishment seems to be just a friendly warning, and the club plans to follow the rules in their next Premier League game at Old Trafford against Ipswich. While they look for a new sleeve sponsor, they’ll wear the league badge on both sleeves.
In their opening game, Manchester United shocked many by losing to Hull. They fell two goals behind within 38 minutes and couldn’t catch up. Although the stats showed a fairly even game with United having a higher expected goals (xG) of 1.83 vs. Hull’s 1.01, and taking 21 shots compared to Hull’s 8, the hosts’ keeper Konstantinos Tzolakis had an outstanding match, making five key saves.
Hull also created three big chances, compared to United’s two, giving them more clear scoring opportunities. Club captain Bruno Fernandes, who just won the 2025-26 PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, spoke openly about the defeat. He said, “Every away game we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, their goalkeeper had the most touches. Same mistakes as last season… we need to press more and be more aggressive.”
His words were met with surprise by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, who called Fernandes’ comments “strange” and criticized the team’s performance.
