Arne Slot gets a new job just months after leaving Liverpool
Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has found a new football job just four months after leaving the Premier League club. Slot was let go at the end of the 2025/26 season after Liverpool finished fifth, a disappointing follow-up to their title win in his first year in charge.
There were rumors about him possibly joining the Dutch national team or Fulham, but he stayed away from football—until now.
Slot, who used to manage Feyenoord, has been chosen to join one of UEFA’s Technical Observer Groups for the 2026/27 season. In this role, he will watch and analyze matches from a coach’s point of view. UEFA Technical Observers also pick the Player of the Match for every Champions League game week.
The group works together to decide on the best team, player, young player, and goal of the season.
UEFA explains that these observers work closely with their Performance Analysis team during games, using lots of video footage from different angles. They can watch live at the stadium or from afar.
All the information they gather is saved in an educational database, with special tools to highlight important technical and tactical points.
They also use data like passes, shots, distance run, and pressing to study things like team strategies, goal patterns, set pieces, and player roles.
And Slot isn’t the only one joining—former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, and ex-Liverpool and Chelsea manager Rafael Benítez, have the same job. Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Thomas Frank, and Sean Dyche are also on board.
Solskjær shared what the role is like last year, saying: “I get to travel to matches and closely watch the technical skill and tactics, plus choose a Player of the Match. It’s a great way to follow the top teams and learn about new trends. Plus, I meet lots of people in football in a relaxed way.”
The Champions League kicks off its fourth game week next week!
