Arsenal’s new summer signing is surprisingly being linked with a permanent move after playing only 45 minutes for the team.
Mikel Arteta has been working hard to improve his Arsenal team this summer so they can defend their Premier League title and go further in the Champions League after losing to PSG in last season’s final.
To boost the squad, the Gunners signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for £75 million to strengthen their midfield, while Christian Norgaard left for Everton. They also brought in Ezri Konsa to support the defense after William Saliba got a long-term injury at the World Cup. Christos Tzolis joined as an upgrade for Leandro Trossard, who moved to Besiktas.
However, one of Arsenal’s new signings might leave before the transfer window closes. He played just 45 minutes so far, coming on at halftime in the Emirates Cup match against Borussia Dortmund, replacing Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Illan Meslier joined Arsenal on July 9 after leaving Leeds United when his contract ended. But according to Foot Mercato, he could be on his way out since Olympique de Marseille are interested. Marseille lost their main goalkeeper, Geronimo Rulli, who went to Manchester City.
Meslier might want to move to Marseille because he’s currently the third-choice goalkeeper behind David Raya and Kepa at Arsenal. The 26-year-old could get a fresh start, especially if Marseille’s starter Jeffrey De Lange leaves soon.
Last season, Meslier lost his spot as Leeds’ number one goalkeeper and didn’t play in the Premier League. Instead, Karl Darlow (now at Manchester United) and Lucas Perri shared those games.
