Lando Norris talks about the £30m salary rumor and shares how his pay stacks up against Hamilton and Verstappen.
Formula 1 world champion Lando Norris has signed a new contract to stay with McLaren until at least the end of the 2030 season.
Lando won his first F1 world title last year by finishing third in Abu Dhabi, making sure race winner Max Verstappen couldn’t catch him in the final standings.
At 26 years old, he is heading into Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix sitting fourth in the 2026 championship, chasing leader Kimi Antonelli and fellow Brits George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Clearly happy with his team and enjoying life after winning back-to-back races in Hungary and the Netherlands, Lando announced his new deal at McLaren’s base in Surrey on Saturday.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said, “This extension gives us important continuity and shows we believe in the path we’re on together.” The deal also includes a multi-year option to extend past 2030, which will be Lando’s 12th season in F1, all with McLaren.
“With him and Oscar [Piastri], we know we have not just a strong partnership but also one of the closest and tightest teams in Formula One.”
There’s been lots of talk about Lando’s salary, with reports suggesting around £30 million or even more. But Lando laughed off these ideas after announcing the contract.
“I think I should earn as much as them, but it’s definitely not close to the numbers I’ve seen online!” he said.
“It’s a bit more than my last contract, like any job when you renew, but it’s nowhere near what Lewis or Max earn. Which makes sense, because I haven’t achieved as much yet, but then again, I believe I can compete with them whenever I need to.”
Right now, Lando’s main goal is to stay competitive with the top drivers on the track. He feels at home at McLaren and plans to spend his entire career with the team. He started as a reserve driver in 2018 and has raced for them for eight seasons now.
After winning two races in a row, Lando is fourth in the drivers’ championship—the first wins of 2026 for him. He’s finished in the points in every race he’s finished, although his only other podiums this year were in Miami and Barcelona.
