A heartfelt request about Michael Schumacher’s health comes as fans get ready for the new Netflix documentary.
Michael Schumacher’s good friend, Marc Surer, has made a heartfelt request to his wife, Corinna, ahead of a new documentary about the famous Formula One star. Everyone agrees that Schumacher isn’t just a motorsport legend, but one of the greatest athletes ever—a topic that will be explored in a Netflix documentary coming soon.
The film, titled *Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend*, will be available worldwide on October 2. Before it comes out, Surer, a retired Swiss F1 driver and longtime friend of Schumacher, hopes that Corinna will share more details about Michael’s current health.
The documentary mainly focuses on the thrilling and challenging 1994 F1 season when Schumacher, just 25 years old, won his very first World Championship out of seven in total. While the film is about that season, previews have shown Corinna getting emotional as she talks about Michael, which has led some to think we might learn more about his health condition.
Since a terrible skiing accident in 2013, when Schumacher hit his head on a rock in the French Alps, he hasn’t been seen in public. He was airlifted to the hospital with a serious brain injury, went through two surgeries, and stayed in a medically-induced coma until mid-2014.
Ahead of the documentary, Surer told OLBG that he wishes Corinna would open up about how Michael is doing. He said, “People know he can’t walk or talk anymore. But I hope she explains his condition — like if he reacts to things, or watches races, or sees other people. It would be nice to know about that. I hope she’s more open in the film.”
Surer, who raced in Formula One from 1979 to 1986 and even raced against Michael in go-karts when they were kids, also shared that he’s stayed in touch with Corinna recently. They often talk about their shared love of horses, which is something close to both their hearts.
“The last time I saw Corinna, we talked about horses,” he said. “She always asks me how my horses are, and I ask her the same. She doesn’t come around Formula 1 anymore, especially since Mick, Michael’s son, isn’t racing there now, so I don’t get many chances to speak with her. The only thing I heard Mick say about Michael was in a press interview where he said, ‘I would give a lot just to talk to him.’ That was really touching and shows how much they miss him.”
Very little is known about Michael’s condition because the family wants to keep his private life away from the spotlight. Surer doesn’t believe we’ll ever see the 57-year-old star make a full public appearance again.
He said, “I’m not sure what good it would do to see him in public now. There was a story about him being at a wedding in Mallorca and being pushed around in a wheelchair, but I don’t know if that’s true. It’s better we remember Michael as he was: happy and winning. I don’t think his family wants people to see him any other way. They want to keep the memory of him as a joyful and successful man. But I’m curious to see what Corinna will say in the documentary.”
In the meantime, fans are eagerly awaiting the documentary to celebrate the amazing career of one of F1’s greatest heroes.
