Tough Everton legend Duncan Ferguson is about to make an amazing comeback to management with a surprising new club!

Everton legend Duncan Ferguson has surprised many by deciding to return to coaching with a club no one expected.

After a famous 16-year playing career, the tough Premier League star moved into management. He served as caretaker manager twice at Everton and then had permanent roles at Forest Green Rovers and Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

His last job ended in October 2024 when Inverness went into administration. But now, two years later, he’s making what some are calling the most surprising appointment in Irish League football history.

After leaving Inverness, it wasn’t clear if Ferguson would come back to coaching or continue with media work. But the Belfast Telegraph reports he’s set to become the manager of Glentoran, a Belfast team currently fourth in the Northern Ireland Football League Premiership.

Ferguson had been linked with the job since last month when Declan Devine left Glentoran after a tough start to the season. Since then, Paddy McCourt and Tim McCann have been in charge temporarily, winning three and drawing one in four games.

Not everyone is happy about Ferguson’s arrival. Former Glentoran star Shane McCabe recently shared his doubts, saying it’s important to know the league well. He said, “I’d prefer someone local with good experience who understands how the league is played.” But he also admitted, “Who wouldn’t want to see Duncan Ferguson managing in a big derby? The big risk is his lack of Irish League experience.”

McCabe’s worries make sense since Ferguson’s time at Forest Green and Inverness was tough, with both clubs suffering relegation. At Forest Green, he won only one of 18 games during his short time there.

Before choosing Ferguson, Glentoran also approached Cliftonville’s manager Jim Magilton and considered former Northern Ireland manager Ian Baraclough.

Fans will be watching closely to see how Ferguson does in this new challenge.
