Man Utd leaders make moves about Michael Carrick just hours after losing to Bournemouth
Manchester United’s top team reportedly had some serious talks about Michael Carrick’s future after their 3-0 loss to Bournemouth on Sunday (October 25).
After a tough 4-1 defeat to Como earlier in the week, Carrick hoped his players would bounce back, but Bournemouth’s goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier, and Evanilson meant that didn’t happen.
This loss means United haven’t won a league match since August and are sitting 16th in the Premier League, ahead of their game against Chelsea on October 31.
According to The Guardian, the club is seriously thinking about letting Carrick go and expects a decision soon. Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and ex-Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann are the main names being linked to the job. Antonio Conte and Unai Emery are also mentioned but seem less likely to take the role. Conte recently said on Instagram that there are no serious talks with any club, and Emery’s price tag could be around £20 million, making him a costly option.
If Carrick is sacked, he’ll be the third permanent manager to lose his job since INEOS took over the club’s football operations. Sporting director Jason Wilcox prefers Howe because of his experience in the Premier League and Champions League, while recruitment head Christopher Vivell is a fan of Nagelsmann. Wilcox’s opinion might influence Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who will make the final call.
After the Bournemouth game, Carrick seemed to wave to the fans, which many took as a goodbye. But Carrick told Sky Sports it wasn’t a farewell. He shared mixed feelings about the tough times the players and supporters are going through and thanked the fans for their support.
He also said he had a short chat with chief executive Omar Berrada and Wilcox after the match but nothing unusual. Carrick said he’s not expecting anything and will continue doing what’s best for the club, no matter what happens.
Fans are already naming who they want to replace Carrick after this difficult period for Manchester United.
