Bruno Fernandes switches up Man Utd routine in a heartfelt effort to connect with fans
Bruno Fernandes is trying to win back the support of Manchester United fans by making an effort to connect with them after being left out of the team for the loss to Bournemouth.
The Portuguese player faced criticism from fans after questioning head coach Michael Carrick’s tactics last week. Following that, he wasn’t picked for the starting lineup in the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
When he warmed up during Sunday’s game, fans gave him a mixed reaction, and he didn’t get to play. Since then, he’s been stopping to meet and chat with as many fans as he can during his visits to Carrington for training.
Fernandes came to Carrington on Monday for treatment, even though the players had a day off for rest. According to The Sun, the 32-year-old took more time than usual to sign autographs and talk with supporters as he wants to rebuild their trust. Usually, he drives straight into the training ground, but now he’s making an effort to connect more with fans.
He kept this up on Tuesday by attending the Manchester United Foundation Dream Day, spending time with fans who have serious illnesses. Fernandes said, “It’s very special for us to be here and bring a little joy to the kids and their families. Making their day is always a proud moment for us. They are so positive and kind, and that good energy goes both ways. This is what Manchester United is all about – it’s part of the club’s culture.”
Fernandes also reportedly had a private talk with Carrick ahead of United’s Premier League game against Chelsea this weekend. BBC Sport says they spoke at the training ground on Tuesday, but it’s not clear if Fernandes apologized for his earlier comments about the tactics used against Como.
Carrick will stay in charge for the match at Stamford Bridge, while the club’s board continues talking about possible new managers. They believe Carrick deserves another chance to improve the team’s results. Meanwhile, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are already on the list of potential replacements, and Antonio Conte is also interested in the job.
