“I’ve never seen anything like the Eala effect” – Three WTA Tour event directors share how Alex Eala is making an amazing impact.

Three WTA Tour event directors have shared how much they love the “Alex Eala effect,” as North American tournaments are seeing a big jump in first-time visitors.

The Filipina star has sparked huge excitement on the WTA Tour in 2026, with fans coming from all over the world to see her play live.

In Toronto, tournament director Karl Hale saw a record-breaking crowd of over 215,000 fans and called Eala’s impact “incredible… The Eala effect was unlike anything we’ve seen before.”

Hale talked about the Canadian Open’s attendance on The Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast, saying the numbers matched those of the men’s event last year. Eala lost in the round of 16 to Belinda Bencic, but her presence clearly drew big crowds.

Similarly, tournament directors in the U.S. told Tennis World that Eala’s popularity led to huge attendance boosts during the hardcourt season.

Washington tournament director Mark Ein, who hosted the event where Eala won her first Tour-level title, shared how the crowds were really influenced by her schedule. Before the event, Ein said his ticket team told him almost all player requests were about Alex. He added, “It was amazing having you and your fans here. You’re growing right before our eyes, and there’s no stopping you.”

In Cincinnati, tournament director Bob Moran described how Eala’s fans showed up super early just to get the best seats. He said, “At 8pm, the line was already formed at the front gate, but we didn’t open until 9:30pm! They waited 90 minutes just to get in.” Moran said he had never seen anything like it.

Back in Toronto, Hale explained how the Canadian Open made changes to welcome all the new fans, especially Filipinos supporting Eala. They added Filipino food and played music from the Philippines during breaks to make everyone feel at home.

“The Eala effect was amazing. She basically sold out four sessions,” Hale said. “We reached a whole new group of tennis fans.”

The Filipina’s rise on the WTA Tour in 2026 has been exciting, with her winning her first Tour-level singles title in Washington by beating world No. 4 Jessica Pegula in August. Her next event in Canada drew thousands of new fans, with four sessions selling out mostly because of her.

Hale added, “Sold out crowds, Eala was incredible.” He also noted how the tournament became the most successful it’s ever been, with the biggest number of first-time visitors. Tickets for her opening match sold out within 30 minutes after the schedule was announced, stopping plans to put her on a smaller court.

Although she recently lost to world No. 13 Diana Schnaider at the Pan Pacific Open, Eala is getting ready for an even stronger 2027, with tournament directors already excited for the “Eala effect” to continue.
